When we think about birth preparation, our minds naturally jump to the big event: labour. We focus on writing birth plans, packing hospital bags, and learning breathing techniques. But there is another vital phase that deserves just as much focus, care, and attention—the fourth trimester.
The fourth trimester refers to the first 12 weeks immediately after your baby is born. It is a beautiful, intense period of immense physical healing, hormonal shifts, and deep bonding. For your newborn, it is a biological bridge as they adapt to the big wide world outside the womb. For you, it is an entirely new chapter of parenthood.
Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to appear live on BBC Breakfast to talk about 'Baby Brain'. Even as a professional perinatal educator, my own very present baby brain and nerves made me realise just how real that foggy, overwhelmed feeling can be in the postpartum period! It highlighted exactly why trying to handle everything alone is impossible—and why having dedicated, trusted support around you is absolutely critical.
If you are currently pregnant and wondering how to navigate the early days of postpartum recovery with confidence, here is your essential guide to preparing for the fourth trimester.
1. Understanding 'Baby Brain' and Giving Yourself Grace
That foggy feeling, forgetfulness, and mental fatigue during the fourth trimester isn't just in your head—it is a real biological and neurological shift. Your body is undergoing massive physical changes while navigating significant sleep deprivation.
Acknowledging 'baby brain' means letting go of the expectation that you can keep up with your old routine. Instead of focusing on "bouncing back" or keeping up with household chores, your only job in the early weeks should be resting, nourishing your body, and bonding with your newborn. Give yourself absolute permission to slow down.

2. Set Up Your Postnatal Support Network
The old saying "it takes a village to raise a child" is especially true during the newborn haze. One of the most important things you can do before your due date is talk to your birth partner, family, and close friends about how they can practically support you.
Support is incredibly important during the postpartum period! It drastically influences how you feel emotionally and physically. Look for support that lifts the burden from your shoulders. Lean on loved ones who are happy to manage meal prepping, take care of household chores, bring over groceries, or watch the baby while you take a long, uninterrupted shower. Never hesitate to ask for help.
3. Learn the Essentials of Infant Feeding and Baby Care
Navigating newborn sleep patterns, understanding baby cues, and learning infant feeding options can feel overwhelming when you are actively sleep-deprived. Gaining evidence-based knowledge before your baby arrives removes the guesswork and reduces early parenting anxiety. Knowing what is normal for newborn development means you can trust your parental instincts right from day one.
